Homework – is short of homework

Movie: Homework
PC: www.isansar.com

Director: Nirak Poudel

Script: Shibham Adhikari

Starring: Aryan Sigdel, Gauri Malla, Namrata Shrestha, Bijay Lama, etc.

In My Eyes: 1.5/5

The social drama Homework has tried to show the clash of two generations and deliver the message on the importance of education through an old man’s journey of schooling in his sixties. Now, this very content is actually interesting and when I first saw the trailer, I thought there’s something new, substantial and authentic in this one. Turns out disappointing.

The old man in the movie is a rich businessman, who has ever supporting and loving and caring wife, a son ashamed of his lack of education and a childhood friend in the form of a school principal. An incident or two happens that leads the old man to disappear from his home, only to be found later in the school of his friend, as a student in full uniform. While he continues his study staying at school for years, his son back at home destroys the business due to his arrogance.

The writing is lackluster. Every major plot looks half-baked, such as the accident of father, and the setting for him to go to school is not so convincing. It seemed like it was made that way, more for the dramatic value of cinema, hence not looking realistic. Just in thought, there were many better ways to a rich old man to study than staying at the school itself.

His schooling also goes in quite a conventional way – first bullying from fellow child classmates, then something happens that make children realize their mistakes and then, friendship. Nothing fresh could be seen. The sub-plot involving a son and his love-interest seemed out of the box as it didn’t project any importance on the main story. There are several other such loopholes.

To point out some goods, the scenes between the parents looked good, even though it was cheesy at times. Their chemistry seemed nice and their conversations, even though too grammatically correct and consisting of rather literary words, were indeed a positive point. The effect of the arrogance of a son was shown in a sound manner as well.

All other technical aspects can be said plain average.

As for performances, Aryan Sigdel has tried his best for the ‘father’ character; his efforts can be seen but is short of briliiant. He is better in his role as a son. Gauri Malla as a mother has given a good performance. Namrata Shrestha (as son Aryan’s lover) has no meatier role, hence limiting her to just a pretty heroine. Bijay Lama as old Aryan’s friend is nice. All other actors are okay.

All in all, Homework tries to deliver a good message, but the whole movie falls flat due to poor writing and not-so-good execution. Homework is short of homework!
