Hawaldaar Suntali - badly presented!

Movie: Hawaldaar Suntali

Director: Rishi Lamichhane

Starring: Shilpa Pokharel, Sabin Shrestha, Kishor Khatiwada

In my eyes: */5

Movie is based on real life events of Suntali Dhami, a police constable raped by senior officers inside police quarter on Dashain. However, we can hardly feel any sensitivity of the issue in movie. It ended as just an old-fashioned drama with heroine beating the hell out of villains and shouting out scripted lines.

Plot:

Nisha (Shilpa Pokharel) is a thief, who does so for raising few orphan girls whom she has adopted. She meets Suntali (Shilpa again), a police constable and Nisha’s lookalike, while she is left stabbed by goons.
After reading Suntali’s diary, Nisha goes on a mission to avenge Suntali’s hurters. Suntali was raped by her senior officers inside the police quarter and her fiancé (Kishor Khatiwada) was murdered later for confronting them. A good inspector (Sabin Shrestha) helps Nisha on her mission. Few songs, many actions and a court scene have inserted in between.

What I felt:

Credits for making such a movie mainly go to captain Rishi Lamichhane. I wish he and the team would have done some thorough investigation of the subject before scripting. I wish the director saap had shown some creativity for movie’s sake. The only good thing in film is the main issue of women violence that it raised and courage of fighting it back.

The whole screenplay with weak and dragged plots and the direction are most faltering points. It is not at all convincing to show a girl fighting alone and killing the goons with such an ease. Wouldn’t senior police officers and CDOs have security in their home? Is killing them that easy? I didn’t like the concept of having lookalikes in first place. It would have been far better if victim Suntali herself was focused as a courageous fighter. Yes, producer definitely wants to make money and the team intends to entertain but in the name of entertainment, why should one overlook the common sense and depend on same old kicks and punches instead of practical approaches? May be, movie could have thus been far better.

That court scene during climax was supposed to be crucial part, but failed totally, as lawyers were advocating unconvincingly; a person could easily escape from court and there is not any security! Then, a girl alone hunts him down, inspector (alone again) joins her later only. And the proof (mobile video) is not even copied for backup! There is Bluetooth, at least! Moreover, that main rape scene could have been more creative than that in movie. It seemed as if we were watching some Kaji saaps raping a village belle in movies of decades back. It didn’t look a bit real. The sequence of Faido-ghato man was insane and retarding.

Editing and cinematography were poor. Why are there so much low angle cuts, which completely ruined the viewing? When Suntali was stabbed, it looked completely fake. Actions were same old flying kicks, round kicks and punches. Background dhisum dhisum music was too loud and too fake! Can swinging a hand in air sound ting-ting? And that background score humming “Hawaldaar Suntali” each time Nisha appeared to kill a villain was too much to bear! Come on, this type of background music used to be in old Rajesh Hamal movies, and this does not sound a bit good!! Songs popped out of sudden. Nevertheless, timro dola dola haatma is fun and entertaining.

Shilpa Pokharel is just average. It is good that she carried whole movie on her shoulder, but performance was not up to the mark. She does stunts well, has commanding voice and has okay presence on screen, but was weaker in delivering dialogues and expressions. Watching her in movie makes it obvious why is she compared to Rekha Thapa. Sabin Shrestha and Kishor Khatiwada are average, nothing much to do than dancing and fighting. Other supporting actors were also only average.

Final Say:

Simply put, Hawaldaar Suntali is yet another example of bad presentation. The content that had good potential is wasted into bad script backed with loud shallow dialogues and unnecessary spices.

This is totally ‘my’ opinion. No offense to anybody. Audience loving spicy action film might love this one. And perhaps that’s why film is making a good business already crossing NRs. 1 crore within less than a week, according to news.
