Rolpa Rog – loosely diagnosed

PC: facebook.com/RolpaRogMovie
Movie: Rolpa Rog

Director/Writer: Dipak Oli

Cast: Shishir Bhandari, Janak Gharti Magar, Kuldeep Adhikari, Sushil Pokhrel and more

In My Eyes: 1.75/5

Rolpa Rog tells the story of three young men and their lives on the periphery of civil war. How the conflict between army and maoist in the war affects their lives form the core content of this film.

One of the good aspects has to be the way it has dealt with the issue of civil war without taking sides of any party, but rather focusing on its effects on the innocent people of the village. It tries to depict how people got involved into the Maoists either forcedly or by the circumstances. Also, it shows how both Maoists and army had committed mistakes that had the direct impact on public.

In addition, the detailing has been taken care of pretty well in the context of rural setting: the dialect, time-period and the costumes as well. These elements help in providing the required authenticity.

However, the poor writing highly falters the movie. More than half of the time goes in showing the sub-stories and developing the preface for the main content. By the time the movie actually starts to get momentum, the events then seem rushed towards the ending. The first half of the movie is very loose, which could have been shortened by properly editing the crucial plots only. The post-intermission is relatively better with the story moving forward but as mentioned earlier, the main subject appears pretty late and ends rather quickly. The writer/director’s work thus is just near average.

Cinematography is just average. Editing is below average, so is the background score and the music too.

Coming to performances, the work of the main three men Shishir Bhandari, Janak Gharti Magar and Kuldeep Adhikari is fine. Sushil Pokharel and the actor playing his younger son are okay. Rest of the actors are like, just there.

Final Say:

Rolpa Rog, despite its pretty good content and a decent attempt to make it authentic one, falls flat due to the faulty writing and execution.
