I argue if people tell that Nepali movies do not have a variety of subject matters or good stories because there was, there is and there will be, nice stories with varieties of contents. Nevertheless, I agree when people tell that Nepali movies do not comprise a convincing structure and effective screenplay. Leaving some exceptionally good ones, many Nepali films have the problem in the script.
I want to talk about some movies, which I felt had nice subject matter but failed in presenting them due to the weak screenplay.
1. Shree Paanch Ambare tried to raise the problem of street-children and their life. How they grow up, face the problems, struggle to survive but end up in the street itself due to the circumstances formed the basic storyline. But the way it was executed with very unconvincing and weak plot, unnecessary songs, loud background music ruined the otherwise nice subject. I was completely disappointed with this one. Talents of Saugat Malla and Keki Adhikari seemed wasted.
2. Kohinoor became the highest grossing Nepali film ever with earning over NRs. 10 crores. With all due respect to Late Shree Krishna Shrestha, I don’t think the movie would have earned the same if the saddening death of Shree had not come right after the release. Subject was the issue of girls trafficking and the storyline was the man, who unknowingly has become a trafficker, struggling to revenge the corrupt officers. How gripping the movie could have been, if the movie had some strong plot instead of showing a single hero rescuing all the girls from a brothel in Mumbai, heroine meeting the hero’s mother for help and residing in hero’s home and all those unnecessary action sequences and old-fashioned drama.
3. Sambodhan dealt with the issue of corruption. Corruption lies somewhere within us, so change must come from ourselves is what Sambodhan aimed to deliver. Nice content and good message, but
while watching the movie, it looked as forcefully dragged with the much use of dialogues instead of visual narration. Hunt of two inspectors to track down the serial killer, who is later shown as the victim of corrupt system, along with a TV journalist formed the basic plot. There were few good and relevant sequences in the plot to support its good content. However, characters were not developed strongly, which looked unconvincing and suffered the whole screenplay. Dayahang Rai saved the grace with his nice performance.

4. Mayaz Bar showed the story of a couple of boxer and bar-dancer and their struggle in the city to survive and provide good life for their son. This is the good subject matter actually, if convincingly told, because it relates to the many other middleclass people struggling in Kathmandu. But the movie was below average due to its poor screenplay and way too much formula elements. It tells that the couple is poor but shows them living in a well-furnished expensive looking apartment. Rajesh Hamal as a don appeared every time only at the terrace of a tall building. The tension between Gajit and Maya hardly looked convincing whereas it was supposed to be the main conflict in the story. Unnecessary songs, villains, kicks, and punches were shown to develop the structure instead of executing the nice content with genuine and real looking plots.
5. Chhadke is well-known to all who know Loot as it had the enormous hype before release because of its terrific trailer and ensemble cast. I actually liked the movie for its raw feel, local setting, background music, performances, and the different approach to tell the story. Nevertheless, I felt some sort of incompleteness in the story to support the transformation of Saugat Malla’s character post intermission. Many others had the same question. Increasing gangster culture and trafficking of animals was the main content supplemented with the one character of the corrupt political leader and other of protecting the jungle. Many things came mixed up that faltered the movie.
