Top 5 Nepali Movies of 2071 B.S.

The past year, as always, saw about 100 movies released and as always, only a few of them proved to be the remarkable ones. 2071 was the year that gave us wonderful Kabaddi and strong Talakjung vs Tulke. The love-story flicks November Rain and Jerryy became both the money-spinner and audience-pleaser.

Some movies with high expectations let down the audiences. Sadanga, Tandav, Shree Paanch Ambare,  Sambodhan fall in this category. Few masala movies fared big at the box-office. Himmatwali, Lajja, Hawaldaar Suntali, Nai Nabhannu La 3 are examples. There was nothing new to point out in these ones but they were surely entertaining for the targeted audience.

And there were some movies attempting something new, which were good too but the box-office factor didn’t go well for them. Suntali, Mala, Red Monsoon are few to name.

Here I have picked my favorite ones. (Although the post title says Top 5, here are 7 in numbers actually)

1. Talakjung vs Tulke and Kabaddi

Talakjung vs Tulke

Talakjung vs Tulke is the tale of a man, labeled as a looser in the society, and his battle with himself for the identity. Director Nischal Basnet has done the captaincy so brilliantly while the actors have given the commendable performances. Khagendra Lamichhane, Richa Sharma, Sushank Mainali were excellent and Dayahang Rai in a brief role was wonderful too. Surely the best one of the year. Tulke Shines and how! A Class movie. This movie is which we can call "मौलिक".

Kabaddi

Kabaddi is one entertaining and amazing movie. The fresh location of Mustang (not just only for the songs) and the freshness in the story were beautiful aspects of this film. And yes, the performances from each and every actors were just right; Dayahang Rai, Rishma Gurung, Nischal Basnet, Buddhi Tamang, Bijay Baral, Aruna Karki, Shishir Bangdel…oh such an awesome ensemble cast and equally good performances! Music was another highlight. A complete package. Kudos to Rambabu Gurung and the team.

2. Suntali

This one was big at detailing and had artsy touch all over. Bhaskar Dhungana gave the beautiful presentation of the simplistic story of revenge but the slow pace played a negative factor. Nevertheless, Suntali was one wonderful effort in the Nepali cinema industry.

3. Mala
The best factor is once again, the story. There was a twist that was a completely new thing to watch in a Nepali movie. Less horror and more suspense, Sudeep Bhupal Singh ‘Bobbie’ has portrayed something substantial in Mala.

4. Raghav
This storytelling by Bhupendra Bhattarai has reality-touch about the life of a Nepali residing abroad. Though it did not get a theatrical release, it was one of the good ones to come out in 2071. Simple and sound.

5. Jerryy and November Rain

Jerryy
One of the biggest hits of the year, Hemraj BC’s Jerryy was nice. The average love-story movie that entertained well.

November Rain
The story of November Rain was less convincing but the director Dinesh Raut made sure that the execution was engaging enough. Songs were nice and so were the performances by three leads. Not bad!
